Maximalist Table Styling: How to Mix Patterns & Textures With Confidence
Today I am sharing tips on how to mix patterns and textures together to achieve a stunning Maximalist Tablescape.
I am absolutely not a minimalist, although I sometimes think that with all the clutter my children make, I would be better off. I definitely am drawn to maximalist aesthetics. I love layering different linens, thrifted items, and my family heirlooms. I love collecting plates and mixing and matching different patterns. It took me a few years, but I finally came into my own style, and I decided that a curated and layered aesthetic is the look I want to achieve in my home.
This is my own personal preference — not everyone likes to go overboard with textures and patterns. If you love minimalism, please do what is in your soul. You should embrace what you love and what makes you feel good. You should always choose what you love, no matter what the trends are.

However, if you are like me and like to go all in with your styling, this blog is for you. My table styling inspiration comes from nature — I love to invite it into my home, in my designs, centerpieces, and accents. A variety of flowers, stems, fruits, and seasonal gifts of nature help you create easy decorations and a thoughtful home.
Maximalist style — the one I am drawn to — is about bold colors and mixing patterns, about celebrating abundance. Table setting is the perfect canvas for you to express your personality through decor — you can really be creative here. More is more, right? By mixing patterns and colors, layering textures, and using bold floral arrangements and juicy fruits as decor, you can bring energy to your parties and make an impression on your guests. That shows them that you really care — not only about preparing food but also about creating a beautiful setting.

Choose Your Palette
Before I begin my styling, I like to choose my color palette. Usually, I stick to two or three main colors — for example, a blue, white, and red combo. Then I decide which one of these colors I want to accent more — by using bows or decorations. You can choose your palette according to the event — for example, green–pink–yellow hues for Easter or baby blue for a boy’s birthday.
The Power of Layering
To achieve a beautifully curated look, you should think about the table as the perfect cake — you apply layer by layer to eventually enjoy the perfect composition of flavors. While adding each textile, you bring depth and richness.
Base Layer:
You can choose a plain or patterned tablecloth, for example, a large dramatic print for your base.
Middle Layer:
A contrasting runner or placemats — I like to choose a more intricate pattern for my base layer and calming geometricals for my placemats so they frame the plates beautifully.
Accent Layer:
Napkins in a bold print or complementary color. Since the napkins are on top, I tend to choose the most beautiful prints or contrasting colors.
Finishing Touches:
Chargers, glassware, and metallic cutlery are the perfect way to add texture to your table.

Play with Scale
The secret to mixing multiple patterns is to vary the scale. For example:
- Use large, dramatic florals as your base.
- Add small, repeating geometrics as accents.
- Introduce medium-sized motifs (like borders or botanical prints) to tie everything together.
This keeps the table vibrant without overwhelming the eye. If you don’t feel comfortable mixing colors, use different patterns but in one color palette for every layer — like blue and white — that’s definitely my favorite combo. Look below to see how I style a table with these hues.
Maximalist Color Pairings
If you are a maximalist like me, you’re not afraid of bold colors and contrast. Here are some examples of rich, harmonious color pairings that you can use in your table settings:
Purple & Gold:
If you’re in the mood for some drama, this is the colorway for you. This combo looks so luxurious and gives off a royal vibe. A great proposition for artistic souls — like me.

Pink & Green:
A very romantic and joyful combination. It reminds me of the secret garden and the roses and tulips in my garden.

Blue & Red:
Since red contrasts with blue, it adds energy to the calming hues. A very bold combination that instantly puts you in a festive mood.

Lilac & Pear Green:
A fresh and elegant pairing — a very happy mix that gives off joyful spring vibes.

Textures to Add Drama
Patterns are only half the story — textures create balance and richness. Here are some examples of how you can use textures to finish off your tablescape:
- Pair smooth cotton linens with woven rattan chargers.
- Mix shiny glassware with matte ceramics — for example, pair clear glasses with hand-painted vintage vases.
- Add metallic cutlery or candle holders for a touch of luxury.
That’s the essence of maximalist decorating — it thrives when every element has a unique feel and tells a story. Use heirloom items like your grandmother’s silver candlesticks or vintage plates.
When Clashing Works
In minimalism, using bold colors and clashing patterns is a mistake. In maximalism, it’s the magic. It’s that layered, curated look that you want to achieve. Mixing florals with stripes? Yes. Animal prints with botanicals? Why not. Multiple bold colors side by side? Absolutely! What matters is that you love it — as long as it gives you joy, there are no rules.
A maximalist tablescape is more than decoration — it’s an expression of you, your unique style, and your creativity. Don’t be afraid to go bold, layer generously, and mix patterns with confidence. The result will always be a table that feels alive, inviting, and uniquely yours. And your guests will surely love it — as they love you.
